Jorge Caballero
Jorge Caballero, at age 22, is regarded by many in the music world as one of the finest guitaristic talents to have emerged during the past decade. A native of Lima, Peru, Caballero began his musical studies with Oscar Zamora at the National Conservatory in Lima. As a young student, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including First Prize at the Peruvian Conservatory Competition, and First Prize at the First Latin American Guitar Competition, which took place in Montevideo, Uruguay. This prize included a major tour, with concerto performances for the 16 year-old Caballero in Mexico City, Washington DC and Spain, as well as throughout South America.
At the age of 19, Mr. Caballero became the first guitarist to win the Naumburg International Competition in New York City. This triumph led to solo appearances in New York (Alice Tully Hall), Washington DC (The Library of Congress), Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, Boston, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Seattle, and concerto appearances with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble.
Of his debut recital in Seattle, critic Mark Wilson wrote: "I have seen the future of the guitar and its name is 'Caballero'. Jorge Caballero has redefined guitar virtuosity - the concert was about that rare wedding of superb interpretation and the jewels of the guitar repertoire", and The New York Times praised Caballero's "illuminating clarity and touching gracefulness". Jorge Caballero's upcoming engagements include solo recitals in New York City (Naumburg Award Recital at Merkin Hall) and Rome (Arts Academy of Rome) and a concerto appearance with The Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra. Mr. Caballero's debut recording of Bach Suites will be issued next year on the Music Masters label, and his future plans include a disc of Latin American repertoire for Bridge Records.
